Dipping bread in milk and sugar was already common in medieval Europe, but it's not clear who we should thank for the addition of eggs to today's torrija recipe.

In any case, torrijas are definitely the second-best way to eat bread, after eating it in bites fresh from the oven. Imagine how much we love them, going on a gastronomic tour tasting the best torrijas in all of San Sebastián. They're so good that even Lope de Vega mentions them in his works. Are French toasts the same as torrijas?

French toast is the American version of torrijas (French toast). Unlike traditional torrijas, French toast is made with sliced bread and is often accompanied by maple syrup, whipped cream, and berries.

What bread should I use to make French toast?

Traditionally, dry baguette bread is used to make torrijas. However, if you want truly moist torrijas, it's best to use milk bread or brioche. Brioche doesn't have a hard crust and has a much fluffier crumb, as well as a sweeter flavor perfect for making torrijas.

Can I use plant-based milk to make French toast?

You can make torrijas with any milk you like. We've even made them with horchata and we love the results.

What to serve with torrijas?

Torrijas are usually sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, but accompanied by pastry cream they become a first-class dessert.
