REVIEW

I’ve tried Snap-on, Robinair, and a few other various brand leak detectors in the past, and none of them were accurate.

The slightest breeze would set them off and give false readings. I use my H-10 Pro for automotive applications, and for every vehicle I’ve had where the UV dye didn’t indicate a leak, this thing has been right on the money. No false readings at all. It takes a bit of maintenance and care to keep it running well, and is a bit on the pricey side, but I’d say it’s well worth every penny. If you do HVAC service of any kind, you need this tool.

REVIEW

As a BMW technician, I found myself many times wishing I had a really good device for detecting those very hard to find leaks that my old Mactco unit would not.

Most freon leaks I am able to locate visually but sometimes there are leaks that need further investigation and this Fieldpiece is perfect for those hard to find leaks. Once you turn it on it is ready to go after about 30 seconds.

This leak detector has been able to locate every leak that the Matco was not.

I have never needed to adjust the sensitivity level but it can. I love the built in user replaceable rechargeable battery with both a wall charger and car charger if needed.

The unit also comes with replaceable filters and a narrow long reach tube for small hard to get to piping. The unit comes with its own case and the leak detector itself is built very rugged and grips great. One last thing I would like to mention is that it has a built in magnet on the back so you can let it hang if needed.

REVIEW

I purchased the TElitech HVAC Refrigerant Leak Detector as a last resort to identify a persistent leak that I had been struggling with for some time.

I was hesitant to use dye and glasses, as I knew that a significant leak could spread contaminants throughout the engine compartment, particularly around the compressor. After researching and consulting with some HVAC professionals, I decided to give this detector a try. The results were impressive; it quickly pinpointed the leak at the compressor seal and even detected smaller leaks at the fittings.

This product offers excellent value for the price, and I appreciate the protective case that comes with it. For optimal longevity, I recommend storing it in a dry place away from humidity and removing the batteries to prevent any potential acid leakage that could damage the connections. Overall, I highly recommend this detector for anyone in need of a reliable leak detection solution.

How to Choose a Refrigerant Leak Detector? Key Features to Consider

Sensitivity Levels

The higher the sensitivity, the smaller the leaks it can detect. A sensitivity rating of 0.1 ounces per year is ideal for precise leak detection.

Detection Method

Refrigerant leak detectors come with various sensor types, including heated diode, infrared, and ultrasonic. Each has unique benefits:

  • Heated Diode: Accurate for a wide range of refrigerants, suitable for both residential and commercial applications.
  • Infrared: Long sensor life and stable readings, excellent for frequent use.
  • Ultrasonic: Non-intrusive and ideal for detecting leaks without refrigerant detection.

Battery Life

For on-the-go technicians, a longer battery life is critical. Many high-end detectors last between 8–10 hours on a single charge.

Probe Length

A flexible and long probe is beneficial for reaching hard-to-access areas, especially in industrial settings.

Cost vs. Features

High-end models with infrared or dual-sensor technology tend to be more expensive but offer precision and durability. Budget options are great for basic home use or quick checks but may lack advanced features.

What you must kow about Refrigerant Leak Detectors: FAQ

What type of refrigerant leak detector is best?

The best type of refrigerant leak detector depends on the application and budget. Electronic detectors, like heated diode and infrared sensors, are highly popular for their sensitivity and accuracy in pinpointing leaks quickly. However, ultrasonic leak detectors, which detect sound waves created by gas leaks, are also effective, especially in noisy or windy environments where traditional detectors might struggle. Each type has unique benefits, so the right choice will align with specific needs and preferences.

What is the best method of detection for refrigerant leaks?

The best method for detecting refrigerant leaks typically involves electronic detectors due to their precision and ease of use. Heated diode detectors are especially popular for quickly identifying small leaks, while infrared detectors offer high sensitivity and long-term stability. For a thorough approach, using an electronic leak detector alongside other methods, such as bubble solutions or dye injection, can enhance accuracy and verify results.

How accurate are refrigerant leak detectors?

Modern refrigerant leak detectors are highly accurate, with most able to detect leaks as small as 0.1 ounces per year, depending on the model and type. Infrared and heated diode detectors generally offer superior accuracy, while ultrasonic detectors can vary based on environmental noise. Regular calibration and maintenance are essential to maintain a high level of accuracy over time.

Which gas leak detector is best?

The best gas leak detector varies by the type of gas, usage frequency, and specific applications. For refrigerants, infrared and heated diode leak detectors are often preferred due to their high sensitivity and quick response. For a versatile option, some multi-gas detectors can detect refrigerants alongside other gases, like methane and carbon monoxide, making them useful for HVAC technicians and various industrial applications.

What is the most reliable leak detection method and why?

Electronic detection methods, such as infrared and heated diode detectors, are considered the most reliable for refrigerant leaks. These detectors offer quick response times, high sensitivity, and stable performance over time, making them ideal for accurate and consistent leak detection. Their precision and ease of use make them a go-to choice in both residential and industrial HVAC applications.

Conclusion: Choosing the Best Refrigerant Leak Detector

Whether you’re a seasoned HVAC professional or a DIY enthusiast, the right refrigerant leak detector makes all the difference.

Look for a model that matches your specific needs, from sensitivity levels and detection method to budget and portability. Advanced detectors like the Bacharach H-10 Pro or INFICON TEK-Mate are excellent for professional use, while simpler models like the CPS Leak-Seeker LS2 Detector serve DIY needs well. Wisely select a reliable detector to save time, reduce energy costs, and protect your systems from potential damage.
